Best Android TV Box Reviews

I decided to throw together a review of my personal experiences with some of the most common Android TV Boxes that have been around for the past couple of years. I can honestly say that I have had first hand experience with all the units in this android TV Box Review. Some work much better than others, and you do not always get what you pay for. So follow along and stay tuned for future android TV box reviews as I continue to test new units when they hit the market.

Matricom G-Box Q Quad/Octo Core XBMC/Kodi Android TV Box [2GB/16GB/4K] (Rev 1.2+)

octo core Reviews

This unit is currently my favorite, so I thought I would start with it first.  It is distributd by Matricom and can be readily found on Amazon as one of the top selling Android TV Boxes.  Matricom was one of the first to market and had a great Marketing team.  Their boxes have dominated the North American market and rightfully so.  The new Octa Core comes with a whole new interface to replace the original Gbox and MX2, however Kodi will still look the same.  The difference is in the processing speed.  The octo core blazes through pages as you search through Kodi for your favorite content.  In the past when I ordered a midnight and MX2 through Matricom they came fully programmed.  I was a little upset that the octo core did not come loaded when I ordered it off of Ebay.  Luckily I was able to do that myself.  Another added improvement was Matricom came out with a new remote to replace that clunky thing they sent out with their first two boxes.  Overall, the money spent on this box is well worth it.

Genda 2Archer TVB-RK3188-A1000 Streaming Media Player, Black

android tv box reviewsThe K-R42, also known as the CS918 came out almost two years ago and was one of the first quad cores to hit the market.  I quickly snapped one up from one of those Chinese auctions sites.  Initially getting XBMC to work smoothly was an issue with the early models, however I have Kodi running smoothly on the box now and would say it is almost as fast as the Gbox Octa Core.  It resembles a old school router in appearance with its small external antenna and includes a small basic remote.  It only has two USB ports, but to be honest I have never needed more than two at once.  One for my wireless keyboard dongle, and a second port for my flash drive.  No particular manufacturer supports this box and you are left to searching on the web for any help.  No worries, there is lots of info out there.  All in all a great score for under $50.

OUYA

ouya kodi reviewsThe OUYA is meant to be a gaming system that comes with a gaming remote and the ability to test out games and make online purchases.  It has also  run KODI like a charm with its quad core processor until the recent KODI update.  I believe KODI support will be ending soon for this box.  For $99 you can order one direct from OUYA.  The video game remote does feature a touch pad, but again, it is a video game remote.  It has been a great box for me but for less money you can get the same or better performance from the above two models.

G-Box MX2 Dual Core

gbox mx2 reviewsThis was THE box to have…..two years ago.  Matricom did a great job with this box and sold a ton of them.  Mine came pre loaded with all of the popular addons.  It worked sweet out of the box, for a day.   The wifi suddenly stopped working.  I was not thrilled with the support I got at the time and loaded a script on it myself.  After that I really had no issues until the KODI script and new codec players being launched just became too much for the dual core.  It still works but can be very slow updating or even going through the pages.  If you still have one of these, I would recommend upgrading to a quad or octa core in the near future.  They still sell new for $80.

MX Dual Core Android TV Box

mx box reviewsChances are if you had a box a couple of years ago, it was this one.  It is the clone box that every dealer in your local paper was pushing.  They were very hit and miss as some people got good ones and others got lemons.  They had problems with the wifi cutting out or they could be very glitchy.  You are watching TV one second and the next second it jumps to the home screen on you.  It comes with the same remote as the MX2 and support for these boxes can readily be found on the web.  Like the MX2, the dual core is in need of an upgrade and I would recommend either the GBOX Octa Core or the K-R42.

G-Box Midnight

gbox midnight reviewsThis was Matricoms first box on the market and the reason for their success.  They came with a great interface and were very user friendly.  The box featured a single core processor and at the time was sufficient to stream most formats with ease.  If you are still using one of these you are either really cheap and do not mind spending all evening searching for a source that will play.  Time to send it to the graveyard.

MK808

mk808 reviewsIf you are looking for an inexpensive compact android TV stick that does not work, then this is the product for you.  You get what you pay for.  My friend and I both ordered one and could not get it to stream without buffering.  It does not come with a remote, so you will need to plug in a wireless keyboard.  For $30 they are selling them on Amazon as Quad cores.  My advice is to steer clear.
